Made in India

India has a massive rag trade, involving, it is estimated, about 3 million rag-pickers or ‘raddiwallahs’ as they are known. They are a familiar sight in India’s towns and cities. Households are usually paid according to the amount they collect, giving them an incentive to do so, as opposed to simply sending to landfill. However, an enormous amount of textile waste still ends up in landfill, and as India’s economy grows, with its burgeoning middle class, this amount is spiralling. Collecting rags and other recyclables from landfill sites is almost an industry in itself. After sorting the waste, the rag-pickers sell it to local recycling or scrap centres, who sell it on in bulk, for instance to the artisans who make rag rugs.
