This wonderfully characterful home for birds is handwoven from colourful recycled fabric. Its rounded body and generous entrance sit beneath a broad, natural-toned mushroom cap, finished with a strong blue and cream hanging cord. The cheerful mix of coral, green, grey and black makes every one a little different.

It brings colour, humour and a touch of woodland charm to a garden while giving discarded fabric a fresh purpose. It is the sort of garden detail that makes you smile whenever you pass it, and buying it supports skilled artisans with regular employment and a fairer way of working.

This birdhouse is made by a Fair Trade handicraft organisation in Moradabad. Created to protect artisans from exploitative exporters, they now provide regular employment to 300 people. Many of its artisans are women who can work from home while caring for their families. The organisation also supports medical treatment and education, runs evening schools for children in remote villages, and helps artisans establish workshops of their own.

Care: Hang securely in a dry, shaded and sheltered position, protected from strong sunlight and severe weather. Check the birdhouse and hanging cord regularly for signs of wear. Remove old nesting material after the nesting season where it can be accessed safely.
